What do you want to see? Victoria Peak and the Lugard Road circuit The 552-metre high point above Central, reached by the 1888 funicular Peak Tram, with the most famous view in the territory: towers stacked below, the harbour, and Kowloon's mountains beyond. The Star Ferry A green-and-white passenger ferry that has crossed Victoria Harbour between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central since 1888, still running as a working commuter service for the price of a small coffee. Tai Kwun, Central The former Central Police Station, magistracy and Victoria Prison, restored into an exceptionally good arts and heritage complex — colonial-era granite blocks, prison cells you can walk into, contemporary galleries and courtyard bars. Man Mo Temple, Sheung Wan An 1847 temple to the gods of literature and war, its ceiling hung with enormous spiralling incense coils that burn for weeks and fill the interior with smoke and slanting light. Sham Shui Po street markets Apliu Street's sprawling electronics and junk market, plus entire blocks devoted to fabric, buttons, beads and computer parts, in the district that still eats and shops the way most of Hong Kong actually does. Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, Lantau A 34-metre bronze Buddha seated on a hilltop above 268 steps, reached by the Ngong Ping 360 cable car over the mountains and coastline of Lantau Island. Dragon's Back trail A ridge walk on the island's southeast corner with sea views on both sides, ending at the beach village of Shek O — the clearest demonstration that three-quarters of Hong Kong is country park, not city. A wet market and its cooked food centre Municipal markets stack live seafood, butchery and produce on the lower floors with a canteen of independent stalls above — the everyday engine of Cantonese eating, lit like a car park and cooking better than most restaurants.
