02Where to stay
Old Town (Vanalinn)
Best for first-timers and short staysCobbled, compact and postcard-pretty, with the highest concentration of restaurants, bars and sights within a five-minute walk of your door. Also the busiest and priciest base, with cruise-day foot traffic to match.
A boutique hotel inside a restored merchant house near Raekoja plats
Look for a small historic-building hotel just off the main square itself for quieter nights with the sights on your doorstep.
€€€A guesthouse tucked into the Toompea hill lanes
The upper Old Town is quieter after dark and has the best skyline views from a short uphill walk.
€€Kalamaja
Best for longer stays and a local-feeling baseA wooden-house design district a ten-minute walk from the walls, with the city's best independent coffee and restaurants and a noticeably calmer, more residential pace once the Old Town closes down for the night.
A design-led apartment in a restored 19th-century wooden house
Kalamaja's converted fisherman's cottages make some of the most characterful short-stay apartments in the city.
€€Rotermann Quarter
Best for ferry travellers and a modern baseA slick converted-warehouse district between the Old Town and the ferry terminal — modern, convenient, and useful if you're arriving or leaving by sea, with an easy walk into the walls.
A contemporary hotel in a converted industrial building
The short walk to both the ferry terminal and the Old Town gates makes this the pragmatic choice for a tight itinerary.
€€€Kadriorg
Best for a quieter, park-side stayLeafy, genteel and quiet, built around the 18th-century palace park a short tram ride east of the centre — a slower, greener alternative base for anyone who prefers calm over proximity to nightlife.
A quiet apartment near Kadriorg Park
You'll trade a few minutes of tram time for genuine green space and a noticeably calmer neighbourhood at night.

03Tickets & tours
Toompea & the Old Town walls
The fortified hilltop that gives the Old Town its skyline — a working seat of Estonian government since medieval times, ringed by limestone wall and…
Tip Walk the short loop of Patkuli and Kohtuotsa viewing platforms for the two best panoramas over the Lower Town's spires and the harbour beyond.
Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square)
The Lower Town's medieval marketplace and civic heart for eight centuries, framed by the Gothic Town Hall — the only surviving Gothic town hall in…
Tip Come back after the day-trip crowds clear in the early evening; the square photographs and feels completely different without a tour group filling it.
Kiek in de Kök & the Bastion Tunnels
A squat 16th-century cannon tower still showing cannonball scars, connected to a network of 17th-century underground bastion passages built for the…
Tip Book the guided bastion tunnel tour rather than just the tower — the tunnels are only accessible with a guide and are the more memorable half of the visit.
Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam)
A maritime museum inside a vast early-20th-century seaplane hangar, centred on a preserved 1930s submarine you can climb through, alongside historic…
Tip Go for the submarine interior first before the midday rush; the narrow passages inside get genuinely congested when a tour group arrives.
Kadriorg Palace & KUMU Art Museum
An 18th-century Baroque palace commissioned by Peter the Great, set in a formal park, paired with KUMU, Estonia's major art museum in a striking…
Tip Allow a full afternoon for both plus the park; KUMU's top-floor Estonian art galleries are easy to underestimate and worth genuine time.
Kalamaja & Telliskivi Creative City
A wooden-house fishing district turned design neighbourhood, adjoining a converted Soviet-era industrial and rail complex now packed with studios,…
Tip Visit on a weekend for the flea market and the fullest version of Telliskivi's energy; weekday mornings are much quieter.
Patarei Sea Fortress
A 19th-century Tsarist-era coastal fortress later used as a Soviet and post-independence prison until 2002, left raw and largely unrestored — one of…
Tip This is a heavy, atmospheric visit rather than a polished museum experience; go in daylight hours and budget at least an hour.
Pirita Beach & Convent ruins
A sandy beach and promenade a short tram ride from the centre, beside the dramatic skeletal ruins of a 15th-century Bridgettine convent destroyed in…
Tip Pair the convent ruins with a walk along the Pirita river and, in summer, a swim — it's the easiest escape from the Old Town's density.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral
A domed, onion-topped Russian Orthodox cathedral on Toompea hill, built in the 1890s during Tsarist rule as a deliberate statement of imperial…
Tip Step inside for the gilded iconostasis and incense-heavy interior, then read the small amount of context posted nearby on why the building remains contested.
Day trips from Tallinn
Lahemaa National Park
Estonia's largest national park, under an hour east of the city — bog trails, manor houses and a wild Baltic coastline, and the easiest way to see…
Day tripHelsinki by ferry
A roughly two-hour crossing of the Gulf of Finland, with multiple operators running several sailings daily, makes a Helsinki day trip genuinely…
Day tripTartu
Estonia's second city and intellectual capital, about two hours south by bus or train — a university town with its own distinct, more bohemian…

04Getting there & around
Getting around
Tallinn is small enough that the Old Town and its immediate surrounding districts — Kalamaja, Kadriorg, the Rotermann Quarter — are all walkable or a short tram ride apart. The Old Town itself is pedestrianised cobble and hills; wheeled luggage and the wrong shoes are both mistakes.
Flights
Compare fares into Tallinn and pick dates that suit the days you planned.
Airport transfers
Book a private or shared ride from the airport so the first evening starts at your door, not at a ticket queue.
Car hire
Only worth it for day trips beyond the city — in town, the plan above works on foot and public transport.
