02Where to stay

Colaba and Apollo Bunder

Best for first-timers who want the sights, the seafront and the museums on foot

The southern tip, wrapped around the Gateway of India. Tree-lined streets, colonial-era facades, the Causeway's stalls, and the widest price range in the city — hostel dorms and India's most famous grand hotel on the same street.

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

The harbour-facing hotels here are the reason people fall for South Mumbai. Pay for the sea view or do not bother with this end of town.

A small guesthouse on a Causeway side lane

Colaba's budget rooms are genuinely central and genuinely basic. Ask for a room off the street; the Causeway is loud until late.

Fort and Kala Ghoda

Best for architecture, galleries and eating in the old city

The old commercial and civic core just north of Colaba — Gothic institutions, the arts district, bookshops, Irani cafés and offices that empty out at night. Quieter after dark than anywhere else this central.

A restored heritage building near Kala Ghoda

Several nineteenth-century buildings here have been converted into boutique hotels. You get the museum, the galleries and Britannia & Co. within a fifteen-minute walk.

A serviced apartment in Ballard Estate

Ballard Estate's Edwardian street grid is the calmest pocket in South Mumbai and about ten minutes from CSMT for onward trains.

Bandra West

Best for repeat visitors, longer stays, and anyone who would rather eat well than sightsee

The suburb with the best food, bars, boutiques and street life in the city, kept low-rise and walkable by its Portuguese-Catholic village bones. Twenty minutes from the airport, and a train or Sea Link ride from the southern sights.

Bandra House - IHCL SeleQtions

Pali Hill and the lanes below it put you within walking distance of Bandra's best restaurants and bars, which is the whole reason to stay here.

An apartment near Carter Road or Bandstand

The seafront promenades are the neighbourhood's living room, busy with runners and families from dawn until midnight. Sea-facing flats are worth the premium.

Juhu and Andheri West

Best for short stopovers, early flights, and travellers with families

Beach-adjacent northern suburbs with the film industry's residential geography, big established hotels, and the best evening chaat stalls in Mumbai. Closest to the airport, furthest from the historic centre.

Novotel Mumbai Juhu Beach

Fifteen minutes from both airport terminals outside peak hours, with the beach and its food stalls at the door. The obvious pick if your Mumbai time is short and flight-shaped.

A business hotel near Andheri Metro

Andheri is a transport junction rather than a destination, but the Metro and Western Line from here reach the rest of the city faster than a taxi ever will.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus

A UNESCO-listed Victorian Gothic railway station from 1888, all turrets, gargoyles and stained glass, that still runs over a thousand suburban…

Tip Photograph the facade from the traffic island opposite, then go inside and stand at the end of a suburban platform around 6pm.

The Gateway of India and Colaba waterfront

The 1924 basalt arch built to mark a royal visit and, ironically, the point from which the last British troops left India in 1948.

Tip Go at 7am. By ten it is a scrum of ferry touts, photographers and balloon sellers; at dawn it is nearly empty and the light off the harbour is the best you will get.

A three-kilometre seafront curve backed by one of the world's great Art Deco streetscapes, ending at the beach where Mumbai comes to eat chaat and…

Tip Walk it from Nariman Point northwards around 5:30pm and eat bhel puri at Chowpatty at the end.

Dhobi Ghat, Mahalaxmi

The open-air laundry where hundreds of washers have flogged the city's clothes against concrete pens for well over a century.

Tip View it from the Mahalaxmi station road bridge rather than walking in. It is a workplace, not an exhibit, and the bridge gives you the whole geometry anyway.

Haji Ali Dargah

A white marble shrine and tomb sitting on an islet off Worli, reached by a long causeway that the sea swallows at high tide, stranding the whole…

Tip Check the tide times before you go, or you will either be turned back or stuck there. Women should bring a headscarf; both sexes should dress conservatively.

04Getting there & around

Getting around: trains, autos, and the traffic problem

Start with the honest version: Mumbai's road traffic is among the worst in the world, and distances that look trivial on a map are not. Twenty kilometres from Colaba to Bandra can take ninety minutes at the wrong hour. The rule that saves your trip is simple — anything north-south during peak hours goes by rail, not road.
