02Where to stay
Menteng and Cikini
Best for first-timers doing the historic sights on footThe Dutch-planned garden district of wide streets, big trees and low villas, close to Monas, the National Museum and the Istiqlal-cathedral pair. Quiet, green, genuinely walkable by Jakarta standards, and central without being inside the office-tower canyon.
The Hermitage, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, Jakarta
Menteng's older properties put you within walking distance of the National Museum and Monas, which removes the single biggest cost of a Jakarta day: the drive.
€€€Hotel Cikini
Cikini has a Commuterline station, the Taman Ismail Marzuki arts complex and a strip of long-established restaurants — good value and far less corporate than Sudirman.
€€Sudirman, Thamrin and SCBD
Best for business travellers and short connectionsJakarta's Golden Triangle: the towers, the embassies, the international chains and the best-maintained pavements in the country. Soulless during the week, but unbeatable for transport connections and the Sunday morning Car Free Day on your doorstep.
Grand Hyatt Jakarta
You are on the MRT line and the airport train link at BNI City, which together make this the least traffic-dependent base in the city.
€€€€Ascott Sudirman Jakarta
Better value per square metre than the hotels, with the Senopati restaurant strip a short ride away for evenings.
€€€Kemang
Best for longer stays and anyone who wants evenings outSouth Jakarta's long-running expatriate quarter — leafy lanes of cafés, galleries, bars and brunch spots, more relaxed and more low-rise than anywhere north of it. Comfortable and a little insulated from the rest of the city, which is either the appeal or the objection.
Hotel Monopoli
Kemang's best rooms are in converted houses with pools and courtyards rather than towers, at a fraction of Sudirman pricing.
€€Blok M and Senayan
Best for repeat visitors, food-led trips and MRT accessMid-south Jakarta around the MRT stations, mixing the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex and its parkland with Blok M's markets, Little Tokyo izakayas and street-corner curry carts. Ordinary working Jakarta rather than a curated version of it.
d'primahotel Melawai, Blok M
Direct MRT to Bundaran HI in under twenty minutes and TransJakarta Corridor 1 straight to Kota — the two journeys that matter, both bypassing traffic entirely.
€€The Residences of The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place
Walking distance to two large malls and the GBK park loop, which is the only decent outdoor running space in central Jakarta.

03Tickets & tours
Monas (Monumen Nasional)
Sukarno's 132-metre marble obelisk in the middle of Merdeka Square, topped with a gilded bronze flame and standing over a national history diorama in…
Tip The lift to the observation deck has long queues and limited capacity — arrive at opening, or skip the top entirely and treat the surrounding park as the attraction,…
Istiqlal Mosque and Jakarta Cathedral
The largest mosque in Southeast Asia, holding upward of 200,000 worshippers, faces a 19th-century neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral across the street.
Tip Istiqlal welcomes non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times and provides robes and a volunteer guide free of charge.
Kota Tua and Fatahillah Square
The old Dutch colonial quarter of Batavia, centred on a cobbled square ringed by the former city hall, the Wayang Museum and the Fine Art and…
Tip Go on a weekday morning if you want the architecture, on a Sunday afternoon if you want the crowd scene.
Museum Nasional (the Elephant Museum)
Indonesia's national museum and the best single place to make sense of an archipelago of 17,000 islands — Hindu-Buddhist stone sculpture,…
Tip It closed after a 2023 fire and reopened with reorganised galleries. Two hours here before you travel anywhere else in Indonesia will make everything you see afterwards…
Sunda Kelapa old harbour
The port that Jakarta grew from, still in use — rows of hand-painted wooden pinisi schooners tied up along the quay, loading timber and cement by…
Tip Go early morning for the light and the loading. A small entrance fee applies, boatmen will offer harbour tours, and the going rate is negotiable — agree the price before…
Car Free Day on Sudirman-Thamrin
Every Sunday morning the city closes its main north-south boulevard to traffic and tens of thousands of Jakartans take it over to run, cycle, do…
Tip Runs roughly 6am to 11am. Take the MRT to Bundaran HI and walk south. Go early — by nine the heat is serious and the crowd is thick.
Glodok and Petak Sembilan
Jakarta's Chinatown, where narrow market lanes lead to the Jin De Yuan temple, thick with incense smoke and one of the oldest Chinese places of…
Tip Come hungry and before noon, when the wet market is still going. Chinese New Year here is spectacular and correspondingly packed.
Setu Babakan Betawi cultural village
A lakeside conservation village in far South Jakarta preserving Betawi architecture, food and performance — ondel-ondel giant puppets, gambang…
Tip Weekends are when performances actually happen; a weekday visit gets you a quiet lake and not much else. It is a long drive south, so pair it with nothing else that day.
Museum MACAN
Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, opened in 2017 in West Jakarta, is the country's first serious museum of modern art and has brought major…
Tip Book online; the popular exhibitions sell timed slots and walk-ups get turned away. It sits in an office park in Kebon Jeruk, so it is a dedicated trip rather than a…
Day trips from Jakarta
Bogor
An hour south on the KRL Commuterline for pocket change, and noticeably cooler than Jakarta because it sits higher.
Day tripKepulauan Seribu (the Thousand Islands)
A chain of small islands in the bay north of the city, reached by boat from Marina Ancol or Muara Angke in one to three hours.
Day tripBandung
The highland city that Jakarta escapes to at weekends, now 40 minutes away on the Whoosh high-speed line from Halim rather than three hours by road.
Day tripEverything to do in Jakarta
Skip-the-line tickets, guided tours and day trips, all in one place on Booking.com.
04Getting there & around
Getting around, which is the whole game
Jakarta's traffic is not a cliché, it is the central design constraint of any trip here. The same eight-kilometre journey can take fifteen minutes at 10am on a Sunday and ninety minutes at 6pm on a Friday.
Flights
Compare fares into Jakarta and pick dates that suit the days you planned.
Airport transfers
Book a private or shared ride from the airport so the first evening starts at your door, not at a ticket queue.
Car hire from Jakarta
Only worth it for day trips beyond the city — in town, the plan above works on foot and public transport.
