02Where to stay
Monterosso al Mare
Best for beach time and easier logisticsThe flattest, largest and most beach-oriented of the five, with the widest choice of hotels and the easiest logistics for anyone who doesn't want to haul luggage up endless stairs.
A seafront hotel near the old town beach
Look for something on the old-town side of the headland, within easy walking distance of both the beach and the train station.
€€€A family-run guesthouse in the old town lanes
Pulling back from the seafront a street or two usually means a quieter night and a lower rate, still an easy walk to everything.
€€Vernazza
Best for the classic Cinque Terre photograph, and the quiet version of itThe postcard village — car-free, intensely scenic, and correspondingly busy by day. Staying here means you get the harbour to yourself at the hours that matter.
A room above the harbour with a sea view
Many stays here are rooms in converted village houses rather than hotels proper — expect stairs, and a view worth every one of them.
€€€Riomaggiore
Best for evenings out and easy La Spezia accessThe liveliest village after dark, with the most bars and the easiest rail connection south to La Spezia — a good base for anyone who wants a bit of nightlife with their cliffside views.
A guesthouse up the main lane from the marina
Rooms higher up the lane trade a short extra climb for a quieter night and, often, a sea-glimpse balcony.
€€La Spezia
Best for budget stays and train-based day trips into the five villagesThe workaday city at the southern end of the line — not a village at all, but flat, well-connected by frequent trains, and considerably cheaper than sleeping inside the park itself.
A hotel near La Spezia Centrale station
Being steps from the regional line that serves all five villages makes up for not actually sleeping inside the park.
€€Levanto
Best for longer stays and a beach town that isn't also a tourist bottleneckA proper beach town just north of Monterosso, outside the national park boundary, with more space, a real sandy bay, and noticeably lower prices for a similar rail connection into Cinque Terre.
A beachfront guesthouse in Levanto
A short train ride from Monterosso, with the breathing room and lower rates that the five villages themselves rarely offer in peak season.

03Tickets & tours
Via dell'Amore
The short, cliff-hugging path between Riomaggiore and Manarola, carved into the rock face above the sea — the most famous single stretch of the whole…
Tip It now requires its own ticket on top of any Cinque Terre Card, sold at both village ends; buy it online ahead in peak season, since daily capacity is capped.
Vernazza harbour & Doria Castle
The horseshoe-shaped little port that launched a thousand postcards, watched over by the ruined medieval castle on the headland above it.
Tip Climb to the castle terrace an hour before sunset — the ticket is cheap and the view down over the harbour roofs is the best in the village.
Manarola's sunset rocks
The cluster of flat rocks just past Manarola's tiny harbour, where half the village and most of its visitors gather to watch the stacked pastel…
Tip Arrive thirty minutes before the sun actually sets to claim a seat on the rocks — it fills up fast in summer.
Corniglia's clifftop centre
The only one of the five villages not built directly on the water, perched instead on a headland reached by a long switchback stairway (or a shuttle…
Tip Skip the shuttle on the way up at least once — the climb rewards you with sea views the whole way, and a cold drink at the top tastes better for it.
Riomaggiore's marina
A narrow stone ramp down to a tiny boat-crammed cove between tall, brightly painted houses — the social heart of the liveliest of the five villages…
Tip Come back after dark; the marina's bars and the floodlit houses above it are a different, better scene than the daytime crowd.
Monterosso al Mare beach
The only proper sandy beaches in Cinque Terre, split between a free public stretch and sunbed-and-umbrella concessions, backed by the village's…
Tip The free public section at the eastern end of the beach gets crowded fast in summer — arrive early or head to the quieter rocks past the headland instead.
Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero
A steep uphill walk from Riomaggiore to a hilltop sanctuary with sweeping views back down over the village and the coast — a genuine workout and a…
Tip Go for the view, not just the chapel, and bring water — there's no café at the top, only a quiet terrace and the coastline laid out beneath you.
The vineyard terraces above Manarola
The dry-stone-walled terraces that produce the local sciacchetrà wine, climbing the slopes directly above the village and crossed by a network of…
Tip Follow one of the marked inland paths up through the vines rather than sticking to the coastal trail — it's a genuinely different, quieter side of Cinque Terre.
Day trips from Cinque Terre
Portovenere & Palmaria Island
A pastel fishing town just south of La Spezia with its own Byronic sea cave and castle, plus a short boat ride to Palmaria island for quieter…
Day tripLa Spezia's museums
The unglamorous gateway city has a genuinely good naval museum and a decent contemporary art scene — worth an afternoon if you want a break from…
Day tripLerici & the Gulf of Poets
A castle-topped resort town on the eastern side of the Gulf of La Spezia, named for the Romantic poets (Shelley and Byron among them) who summered…

04Getting there & around
Getting around — and the Cinque Terre Card
There are no roads connecting the five village centres, and that's the point — cars are banned or severely restricted inside every one of them, so forget driving between villages.
Flights
Compare fares into Cinque Terre and pick dates that suit the days you planned.
Airport transfers
Book a private or shared ride from the airport so the first evening starts at your door, not at a ticket queue.
Car hire
Only worth it for day trips beyond the city — in town, the plan above works on foot and public transport.
