02Where to stay
Zamalek
Best for repeat visitors, longer stays, anyone who wants a calm baseThe island in the Nile — tree-lined, embassy-quiet, full of galleries and good restaurants, and the only central neighbourhood where an evening walk is genuinely pleasant. More expensive than the rest of the city, and worth it if you value decompression at the end of a Cairo day.
Cairo Marriott Hotel & Omar Khayyam Casino
The river views from Zamalek's eastern edge look straight across to the Downtown skyline, and the island's bridges put you ten minutes from Tahrir outside rush hour.
€€€Longchamps Zamalek Boutique Hotel
Zamalek's interior streets are quiet in a way almost nowhere else in central Cairo is, and having a kitchen matters more here than in most cities.
€€Downtown (Wust al-Balad)
Best for walkers and first-timers who want to be in the middle of itThe Belle Époque grid around Talaat Harb and Tahrir — grand faded apartment blocks, old coffeehouses, bookshops, constant noise, and the best street-level texture in Cairo. Scruffy and central in equal measure.
Berlin Hotel
Downtown has a growing cluster of small hotels carved out of the original apartment floors, with the original tilework and cage lifts intact. Ask for a room off the street side — Cairo traffic does not stop at night.
€€Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo
Puts the Egyptian Museum and the Metro within walking distance, which on a bad traffic day is worth more than any amenity in the building.
€€€Giza plateau
Best for short trips built around the pyramids and the new museumThe strip of guesthouses and hotels in the residential streets right below the pyramids, many with rooftop terraces looking straight at them. Not a charming neighbourhood at ground level, but the view is the entire product and it delivers.
Akhnaton Pyramids View Hotel
Waking up to the Great Pyramid over breakfast is the reason people stay here, and being at the gate for opening beats a 45-minute morning transfer from Downtown.
€Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo
Quieter and more polished than the guesthouse strip, with the trade-off of needing a car for everything including the ticket gate.
€€€€Garden City
Best for travellers who want Downtown access without Downtown noiseCurving early-twentieth-century streets of embassy villas and mature trees, immediately south of Downtown on the east bank. Deliberately laid out to be confusing, and correspondingly quiet for how central it is.
Kempinski Nile Hotel Cairo
Garden City's riverfront holds several of the city's long-established international hotels, with the museum and Tahrir a fifteen-minute walk north along the water.

03Tickets & tours
The Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
Three pyramids built for Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure around 2600–2500 BCE, plus the Great Sphinx and a field of smaller queens' pyramids and mastaba…
Tip Be at the main gate at opening, not later. Going inside the Great Pyramid costs a separate ticket and buys you a steep, hot, low crawl up a cramped passage to an empty…
Grand Egyptian Museum
The vast new museum on the Giza plateau, two decades in the making, holding over 100,000 objects including the complete Tutankhamun collection…
Tip Book timed tickets in advance and give it a minimum of four hours; people routinely underestimate the scale and end up sprinting the last galleries.
The Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square
The original 1902 museum on Tahrir Square — dim, crowded, gloriously old-fashioned, with wooden cases and handwritten labels.
Tip Go for the atmosphere as much as the objects; this is what a great museum looked like a century ago.
Khan el-Khalili and Al-Muizz street
A market since the 1300s, and the spine of medieval Cairo running north from it.
Tip Do Al-Muizz in the evening when the facades are lit and the temperature drops, then take tea at El Fishawy, the coffeehouse that has reportedly been open since 1797.
Mosque of Ibn Tulun
Cairo's oldest mosque surviving in its original form, completed in 879, built of mud brick around a courtyard of extraordinary scale with a spiral…
Tip Climb the minaret for one of the best rooftop views over Islamic Cairo, then visit the Gayer-Anderson Museum next door — a pair of restored merchant houses built into…
The Citadel and Mosque of Muhammad Ali
Saladin's twelfth-century fortress on a limestone spur above the city, crowned by the nineteenth-century Ottoman-style alabaster mosque of Muhammad…
Tip The terrace view across the whole medieval city to the pyramids on a clear day is the reason to come.
Coptic Cairo
The Christian quarter inside the Roman fortress of Babylon: the Hanging Church suspended over a gate tower, the Church of St.
Tip Reachable directly by Metro to Mar Girgis station, which sidesteps a long taxi ride. It is the calmest historic quarter in Cairo and the only one where nobody will try…
A felucca on the Nile at sunset
The traditional lateen-sailed boats still work the river through central Cairo, and an hour on one at dusk is the only time the city goes quiet.
Tip Agree the price and the duration before boarding, and expect to be quoted per hour for the whole boat.
Day trips from Cairo
Saqqara and Dahshur
Half an hour south of Giza and a fraction of the crowds. Saqqara holds Djoser's Step Pyramid, the oldest large stone structure on earth, and painted…
Day tripMemphis
The ancient capital of the Old Kingdom, now an open-air museum of scattered statuary in a village near Saqqara, dominated by a colossal fallen…
Day tripAlexandria
Two to three hours north by train from Ramses Station — take the express and sit in first class, it costs very little.
Day tripFayoum
An oasis depression about ninety minutes southwest, with Lake Qarun, the desert lakes and dunes of Wadi El Rayan, and Wadi El Hitan — the Valley of…

04Getting there & around
Getting around a city that does not move
Cairo traffic is not exaggerated. It is regularly ranked among the worst in the world, and a journey that Google Maps estimates at twenty-five minutes can take ninety at the wrong hour with no warning and no alternative route.
Flights
Compare fares into Cairo and pick dates that suit the days you planned.
Airport transfers
Book a private or shared ride from the airport so the first evening starts at your door, not at a ticket queue.
Car hire from Cairo
Only worth it for day trips beyond the city — in town, the plan above works on foot and public transport.
